Pine Knoll Shores is the quietest and most residential of the Crystal Coast beach communities — no commercial strips, no chain restaurants, no beach bars. Much of the land here is part of the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, giving the community a protected, preserved character unlike any other Crystal Coast beach town. What it does have is the NC Aquarium sitting just behind the dune line, 2.5 miles of hiking trails through old-growth maritime forest, and one of the cleanest and least crowded beaches on Bogue Banks.
The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is a must-see. The 306,000-gallon ocean tank is the centerpiece, but the exhibits throughout — sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, coastal ecosystem recreations — are well worth the visit. Plan two to three hours and go on a weekday if possible.
Pine Knoll Shores is a designated sea turtle sanctuary, and nesting activity is common along the beach in summer. Dogs are welcome year-round on a leash — the quiet, uncrowded stretch of beach here is particularly relaxed for pet owners compared to busier sections of Bogue Banks.
Guests at our Pine Knoll Shores homes can use the HOA amenities: the community beach accesses, sound-side piers, kayak racks, picnic spots and the boat ramp. Golfers can also check tee times at Crystal Coast Country Club; it’s a membership club, but non-members can often book — call the pro shop ahead.
