What guests and homeowners need to know about storm season on the Crystal Coast — honest information, clear policies, and how we handle it when weather threatens your plans.
Hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30. Peak activity on the Crystal Coast is mid-August through mid-October. We offer travel insurance right after booking and strongly encourage every guest to take advantage of it.
This is the most common concern guests have when booking a Crystal Coast vacation in summer or fall — and it deserves an honest, complete answer rather than vague reassurances.
Guest safety is always the first priority. We monitor all weather systems that may affect the Crystal Coast and proactively communicate with guests when a storm poses any risk to their stay. You will never find out about a serious storm from a news alert before hearing from us.
Carteret County issues mandatory evacuations when a significant hurricane threatens the area. When this happens, you are legally required to leave — there are no exceptions and no warnings. Staying is not only dangerous, it exposes you to potential legal liability.
If your stay is impacted by a mandatory evacuation, we will work with you on any applicable refund per the terms of your rental agreement. Refund eligibility depends on when the evacuation is ordered relative to your stay dates and what travel insurance you have in place. This is why we offer travel insurance right after every booking and actively encourage guests to use it — it protects your investment in a way our rental agreement alone cannot, and we never want a guest to be in a difficult position after an evacuation.
We present travel insurance as part of every booking because we genuinely believe in it — not as an upsell, but because it's the single most effective way to protect your vacation investment. We encourage every guest to take advantage of it. A good policy with trip cancellation and interruption coverage can reimburse you for your rental cost, flights, and other pre-paid expenses if something unexpected happens. Standard rental agreement cancellation policies do not cover weather events the same way insurance does. For any booking between June and November on the Crystal Coast, the cost of a travel insurance policy is modest relative to what it protects.
Not every storm requires evacuation. For watches, warnings, and tropical storms that don't trigger mandatory evacuation orders, we stay in close communication with guests and provide regular updates on conditions and any impact to their stay. In many cases, a storm passes quickly and the beach is beautiful the next morning.
We make decisions based on what's actually happening — not on weather forecast hype. If the storm isn't going to materially impact your stay, we'll tell you that clearly. If it is, we'll tell you that too.
Strong winds, power outages likely. Some damage to structures and trees.
Extensive damage. Near-total power loss. Uninhabitable for days to weeks.
Devastating damage. High risk to life. Major evacuation required.
Catastrophic damage. Survival may require evacuation days in advance.
Complete destruction. Immediate evacuation of all coastal areas required.
The bridges off Bogue Banks become severely congested during evacuations. Leaving at the first evacuation order — rather than waiting to see if it gets upgraded — can mean the difference between a 20-minute drive to the mainland and a 4-hour ordeal. Don't wait.
Our storm preparation protocols are active from the first sign of a serious threat — not after a mandatory evacuation is issued. Here's what we do when a storm threatens your property.
Every Crystal Coast vacation rental should carry adequate windstorm and flood insurance. Standard homeowner's policies often exclude wind and flood damage — the two most common causes of hurricane damage in coastal NC. We recommend consulting your insurance agent about:
