Atlantic Beach anchors the eastern end of Bogue Banks and is the most accessible and amenity-rich beach community on the Crystal Coast. The Circle — the town's central beach hub — has lifeguarded swimming, a playground, volleyball courts, public restrooms, and a cluster of restaurants and shops that make it the easiest beach access point on the island.
At the eastern tip of the island sits Fort Macon State Park, a remarkably well-preserved 1834 Civil War fort with a free museum, maritime shrub nature trails, and one of the most beautiful stretches of undeveloped beach on the Crystal Coast. The park sees heavy visitation but the undeveloped beach beyond the fort remains quiet even in peak season.
Dogs are welcome year-round on a leash under 12 feet, with the only restriction being that they stay clear of the lifeguarded sections near The Circle during staffed hours. Outside those zones the entire beach is open. A Food Lion is on the island for grocery basics — Walmart, Harris Teeter, and Lowe's Foods are all in Morehead City, 15 minutes across the bridge. Atlantic Beach also has some of the most consistent surf on the Crystal Coast, with several surf schools operating seasonally.
